Only a few revered and influential musicians, better defined as legends, can last for 25 or more years in the music game/industry and remain relevant.

One seasoned Spikiri “King Don Father” Mofokeng, a deserving member of this elite list, has reached this feat and embodies everything it stands for and more. A guaranteed and consistant hitmaker (”Current”, Trompies’ “Sgiya Nengoma”, “Vokol” by Alaska, “Vat & Sit”) over the years, he has managed to stay true to what he is, does best and reinvented his music over and over again to stay relevant, and still maintained that killer “Spikiri” signature sound.

His 25th anniversary celebration album “has reached him at the Top of his game” and he says he still takes his job seriously. Led by the hectic single “Ngeke Balunge” (featuring Teargas, Bricks, Madluphuthu, Skhokho and Brown Dash) and the Siyarokha (featuring Louie Vega, Minister Fikile Mbalula, Greg Maloka, Oskido, Mr Selwyn and Alaska), Spikiri says that the album is testament to his longevity and his chosen music genre - kwaito. “When I get into the studio, I go in there to do a better project than the last one,” says the Trompies member. “I don’t rest on my laurels, always respect my fans and always put in more than enough energy into my work, afterall, ‘you are only as good as your last hit’ .”

Separated into a Red and Black discs that features an army of more than 60 previous and newer collaborators, this is a 28track offering that demands space in your music collection. The red album features collaborators such as Professor, Big Nuz and Speedy on the highly spirited statement maker “Umoya” that also signals the return of the Boss; the 25-years celebratory “Something to Remember” featuring Zakes, Ishmael, T-Rolle and Mr Selwyn, Abomrapper Flabba, Hhp, Pro rocking a kwaito beat with the legendary Baby Gee on “Mini Sket; Thebe, Mandoza, Magesh, Mjakes, Robbie Malinga on the vibrant “Don’t touch my phone”; Stoan, Doggz of War, Skhokho appear on the playful “Abo Nice”, delivered in a an unmistakenly Pretoria lingo and XiTsonga; “; the explosive “Woh Bus” features Baksteena, Gunman, Speedy and Bouga Luv; Junior Mabhokodo, “Pikinini” showcasing Alaska, Bhelekazi and The Kids; Professor, Brown Dash, General (GTZ) and Tira are on “Skeem Sam”, and hitting with a hip-hop beat on the sizzling “Fire” featuring L Skills, Stoan, Bhelekazi and Mzebbs.

Demor and Bhelekazi kick off the deeper with a tinge of house Black Album with “Stop it I like it”, “Mantjontjelana” features Gurash, Mzebbs, Thabs Le Madonga, Skhokho and Bhelekazi; Fox, Dogz of War, Diliza, Gizmo on the stupefying and honour bestowing “King Don Father”; Alaska, Brown Dah, Jairos, and General team up on the fiery “Kamjakajaka”, “Gangsta Love” featuring Brown Dah, Bhelekazi, Skhokho and General; “Better Days” featuring Bantu Soul; and Masheleng riding with Speedy, Stapora, Mzeyks, Benzy, Guffy, Ma7 and Thabs Le Madonga on “Come “n Go”, Crowded Crew on “Lebekere”; Sparara with Sparara, Fox, Mzebbs and Navy; Mgiftana, Skhokho, Brown Desh, Mzebbs and General are on “Uyabona Manje”; Bloq featrues on both dics’ “Africa’ and “Africa” remix, and more.

The star who has produced for a varied list that includes Bongo Maffin, Kabello, says he loves working with different artists, hence the army from various genres that are part of this album. “They are just as responsible for my success,” he says”, “they add their own element to my music and inspire me. Yes, my music can have my signature sound, but there is a crowd for HHP, Pro, Kabello and they also add other elements that are loved by many. ”

Spikiri says working on this special album was very emotional. “This has to be the best album I have done, and its clear proof to all the doubters that kwaito isn’t dead. It won’t die while I am still alive,” he quipps. “It wasn’t child’s play as many artists/producers couldn’t reach this level and could’t sustain their careers. I have managed to do music that both the young and old; doctor or lawyer; labourer or manager, or anyone can enjoy.”

He adds that there are many ways to change with times. “This can be through working with various artists, through lyrical content or musically. “I was there at the beginning of Durban kwaito with Professor and look where it is now. I do many sounds, but maintain my signature. U can’t miss that Spikiri Bassline and it defines my music. Add to that the fact that I always go out to create a classic album. I deal with quality and celebrating with that hardcore kwaito genre that they say is dead. This is talent that God gave me”

Defined as kwaito itself, he has previously worked with Skwatta Kamp, Busi Mhlongo, Hugh Masekela, Don Laka to mention just a few. Beside being a solo artist, Spikiri is a member of the long standing Kwaito outfit, Trompies, and he is one of the co-owners of the Kalawa Jazmee Records hit factory – an independent record label that has been kicking some ass and taking South African music to another level and introducing it to the four corners of the world. Spikiri’s amazing talent has seen him doing the signature tune for Mzansi’s most favourite soapie Generations and now he is on another mission.
Kwaito is Alive… We bow down to you King Don Father.

AZIZ FAYE - Traditional Sabar Drumming and Dancing - Dakar, SENEGAL

AZIZ FAYE
TRADITIONAL SABAR Drumming & Dancing - SENEGAL

Aziz Faye, the Artistic Director and featured performer of Khaleye Nguewel Thi Keur Gui, comes from a long line of master Sabar drummers and dancers. He is nguewel, which means he was born into drumming. They say nguewel children are nursed from the drum. He grew up in a village called Medina, the nguewel suburb of Dakar, learning from his father, grandfather, and his uncles, the secret of the drum. After mastering Sabar, Aziz went on to master Djembe drumming as well. From a young age he stood out as one of the most talented of his generation. As a young boy he was a premiere performer in Le Ballet Sing Sing Rhythm, both dancing and drumming, and has performed with the National Ballet of Senegal. Aziz has also played (drumming, singing, and/or dancing) for many world renowned mbalax bands such as Yousou N’Dour, Fallou Diene, Baba Mal, Ismiel Lo and Mbaye Dieye Faye, as well as European artist Peter Gabriel. In 1999 Aziz was commissioned to play for Ike Quartay in his fight against Oscar de la Hoya. He is truly an artists artist.

Besides being exquisitely beautiful and exciting to watch, Sabar, it’s music, dance, and song, is used as a vehicle to communicate the oral tradition of the Wolof. Legends, myths, fables, riddles, and proverbs have been transmitted from generation to generation by nguewels through Sabar.

Sabar and the nguewel people are an integral part of the Wolof ritual and social life. The ballets depict scenes from daily life such as childbirth celebrations, harvest festivals, marriage celebrations, healing ceremonies, ritual combat, possession dances, traditional dance and drum parties and rites for the king. Khaleye Nguewel Thi Keur Gui attempts to share the wealth and beauty of the nguewel culture and bring appreciation and understanding of this tradition to its audiences. They feature an exciting collage of traditional Senegalese dance and drum forms including Djembe and Sabar. The ballet also features the music and song form of Kora, a 21 stringed harp-like instrument. The ballets reflect Senegal’s rich and varied cultures. Its members come direct from the homeland and have all performed with Le Ballet Nacional du Senegal, the country’s leading traditional dance and drum group, as well as other renowned traditional troops such as Le Ballet Sing Song Rhythm, Ballet Raka Djou, and Ballet Doudou N’diaye Rose. Khaleye Nguewel Thi Keur Gui is an explosion of colorful costumes, high energy dancing, song, and spine-tingling rhythms that come strait from the heart of Africa.
